Module 1: What is Debate?
Students discuss what makes formal debate different from a typical argument. The class dives right in with impromptu SPAR (Spontaneous Argument) debates.
Module 2: Crafting Arguments
Students learn about the four parts of an argument—claim, warrant, data, impact—and practice identifying and writing their own arguments.
Module 3: Data and Research
Students will learn about the research process and how to evaluate a source for authority, relevance, accuracy, objectivity, and currency. Students will practice integrating research into their speeches.
Module 4: Writing a Speech
Students will integrate the skills they have learned to write a formal debate speech and practice debating each other.
Module 5: Taking Notes in Debate
Students will learn the art of flowing a debate speech to better track arguments and form rebuttals.
Module 6: Giving a Speech
Students will learn fundamental principles of public speaking, including Aristotle’s ethos, pathos, and logos.
Module 7: Best Practices and Judge Considerations
Students will learn about some of the finer details of formal debate best practices and how teams interact with one another. Students will also discuss how various judges assess a debate and use this information when preparing their speeches.
Module 8: Practice
Students will spend class time discussing, preparing, and researching for various debate motions. Then, students will debate one another and be judged. This module focuses on solidifying skills taught in all previous lessons.
Students will practice the various debate styles.
